BAW Across the Continents 2014: Europe

We’ve looked at Brain Awareness Week in Africa, Asia, Australia, South and North America. Today we complete our trip around the world in Europe, where hundreds of events are scheduled across twenty-five different countries. The participating countries are Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine and the United Kingdom.  Last year we focused on the six countries—Croatia, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom—with the most events; this year we will take a look at a different group.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, 250 free lectures on memory have been organized for their National Week of Memory Training. At a music school in Greece, preceding a recital, students and parents will have a chance to examine macroscopic and microscopic specimens of the brain and neural structures. A symposium in Portugal will feature a conversation between a neuroscientist, priest, writer, and comedian about how humor, religion, and culture affect how our brains make decisions.

In northern Europe, university students in Galway, Ireland ,will learn about career paths in neuropsychology, psychology, and neuroscience. A brain research institute in Finland will hold lectures and demonstrations describing how different aspects of culture can affect the brain. And, at a university in Denmark, one of the winners of The Brain Prize in 2013 will present the lecture “A Neuroscientist’s Adventures in Mind Control.” The lecture will describe research in optogenetics, a technology using light activated proteins that can be encoded with DNA to essentially remote-control specific brain cells where those proteins are produced.

That concludes our glimpse into Brain Awareness Week Across the Continents. Are you still hungry for more events? Go to the BAW international calendar where you can look through the nearly 1,000 events posted.
