Baseball on the brain

As spring training gets under way, fans are blocking out winter weather and looking ahead to that first call of “Play ball!” Even before the regular season begins, be on the lookout for our book Your Brain on Cubs: Inside the Heads of Players and Fans, scheduled to hit store shelves March 17.

Your Brain on Cubs Cover - ThumbnailIn the book (click here for excerpts), brain scientists and science writers explain, in an enjoyable way, how the brain underlies so much of sports fandom: the roots of loyalty, our joy when our team wins and pain when it loses, and why our brains make room for superstition. Other contributors focus on how the brain allows players to develop expertise in a general sense and, more specifically, how they are able to connect with a 95 mph fastball. Also in the lineup are chapters about handedness and the ethics of brain-enhancing drugs.

I also must admit to being proud of an interview about the book that aired last month on the Chicago Public Radio program “Eight Forty-Eight.”

If you’re in Chicago, the D.C. area or Central Illinois, stay tuned for book-related events.
