Brain Awareness Week is everywhere! We’ve already been to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, and today we are going down under to see how Brain Awareness Week is being celebrated in Australia and the Pacific Islands.
Australia and New Zealand are the only two countries in the Pacific Islands participating in BAW, but both are very actively promoting brain awareness through a total of 25 events.
A main Brain Awareness Week event in Australia is the Australian Brain Bee Challenge. The nationwide competition has two rounds. The first round is an online competition, and then the top 150 students compete live in round two in Queensland. While there, they learn more about neuroscience through lectures and lab tours. The Australian Brain Bee is not the only way the Aussies will be raising awareness; there will also be a sponsored silence to raise money for people with neurological disorders and a live theater show in the city of Perth called “The Great Brain Odyssey,” followed by a discussion with neuroscience experts.
To celebrate Brain Awareness Week, towns and cities throughout New Zealand will host “Brain Days.” Brain Days are community events that include lectures, exhibits, hands-on activities, and information tables. New Zealand will also hold a National Brain Bee competition in conjunction with the Australian Brain Bee.
